Since it is common for journalists to use information from outside sources in order to write their articles, the Fair Use Doctrine, in certain instances, may help to avoid the burden of having to obtain authorization from every copyright owner when using copyrighted material in a specific work. In this regard, Section 107 of the Copyright Act provides that certain types of use such as commentary, news reporting, criticism, scholarship, teaching, and research may be deemed fair use (nevertheless, such cases, are examined on a case-bycase basis by the court).
